FOUNDER'S MESSAGE
I received my heart transplant in 2004. Going from near death to a reinvigorated, healthy life is a profound and wonderful experience. It certainly requires you to think about what to do with the remainder of the time that has been granted to you.
The answer to that question is different for every organ transplant recipient. For me the answer was to establish CODA-The Charity for Organ Donation Assistance which I established this year.
Too often since receiving my own transplant, I have seen the joy of receiving a new organ diminished for some organ recipients by the financial burdens that come with it. It is important to remember that an organ transplant doesn't financially impact the recipient alone. It has financial ramifications for the whole family.
Examples are:
- Budget-busting medical bills due to vital pre-transplant and intensive post-transplant care.
- High prescription drug costs for the anti-rejection drugs that must be taken for the rest of your life and protect a recipient from having his or her immune system reject the transplanted organ.
- Exhaustion of retirement savings and more reliance on inadequate government programs.
- Loss of income, with the resulting need for public assistance, putting additional strain on the social safety net in the DFW area.
We're new but we're off to a great start in our efforts to provide financial assistance in a manner that is unique not only in the DFW area but I think in the United States.
Visit our "CODA Programs" page describing the new types of programs we are developing to assist DFW area transplant recipients and for those on a transplant waiting list. Also view pictures of our first two fine young scholarship recipients under the "Educational Grants" section.
Your charitable contribution will help us make the DFW area a national leader in this area of healthcare. Browse the site and then please help your fellow residents by making a generous financial donation to CODA.
Thank you, and most especially, thanks to my anonymous donor and his family---they are my heroes.
